The 5th International Workshop on Breathing Pacemakers and Disorders of the Diaphragm was held at the Sheraton New York Hotel in New York City on September 12, 2008. Attendees included surgeons, pulmonologists, physiatrists, nurses, and respiratory therapists, as well as prospective patients and their families, representing six countries. This all-day event covered a variety of topics including a retrospective analysis of diaphragm pacing, surgical treatment of diaphragm disorders, preoperative screening of diaphragm pacing candidates, new techniques for treating diaphragm paralysis, and a discussion on future developments in breathing pacemaker technology. |

Patient Presentations
| Chuck Foss became a C2 quadriplegic as the result of a shooting accident in 1980. He was implanted with his breathing pacemaker by Dr. William W.L. Glenn at Yale University in 1981, and has been pacing for over 27 years. Chuck went on to finish high school and attend a local community college. He works full time as a programmer analyst for a major insurance company. | |
